When rehab can begin after a surgery depends on many factors: the surgery itself, individual health conditions, and tissue damage, for example. Patients who go through minimally invasive procedures, such as arthroscopic surgeries, can begin rehabilitation soon after. Those who go through much more invasive procedures may not be able to start rehab for several weeks or even months.

The goal of short-term rehab is to help individuals recover quickly to restore independence, strength, and mobility. Its purpose is to help patients regain their functional abilities to safely perform daily tasks on their own.

The length for rehabilitation after a hip or knee replacement varies from patient to patient depending on individual health factors. Most patients stay in the hospital after the procedure for one to five days. The two weeks after surgery, gentle and light walking with support from a cane or walker is heavily encouraged. During weeks three through twelve physical therapy is under way, and daily activities become easier and less painful. Full recovery can take three to twelve months, depending on the individual and their circumstance.
