Dialysis Treatment

Chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, diabetic nephropathy, and a number of other ailments and disorders may affect the body’s ability to filter and remove waste from the blood, which can lead to life-threatening complications. Older people who may not be good candidates for kidney transplants can continue living comfortably with regular dialysis, as long as their body can tolerate the treatments.

At Ciena Healthcare, we are committed to ensuring residents who require dialysis treatments receive them at the necessary intervals. Our care teams also excel at helping residents cope with this imposition and manage the side effects of dialysis treatments. Our fundamental goal is to ensure every resident receives the care and support required to live healthier, fuller lives, despite their condition.

What Is Dialysis?

Dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment that performs the essential function of the kidneys when they can no longer do so effectively. It involves removing waste, excess fluids, and toxins from the blood, which the kidneys would typically filter out.

There are two primary types of dialysis:

1. Hemodialysis: This is the most common form of dialysis, where an artificial kidney (hemodialyzer) filters the blood. A healthcare professional connects the resident or rehabilitation guest to the machine via a vascular access point, and the blood is drawn from the body, cleaned, and then returned to the bloodstream.

2. Peritoneal Dialysis: In this type of dialysis, the blood is cleaned inside the body using the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum) as a filter. A cleansing fluid is introduced into the abdomen through a catheter, and waste products are absorbed into the fluid before being drained.

Both methods require ongoing treatments, which can range from several times per week to daily sessions, depending on the individual’s needs. Dialysis helps manage symptoms of kidney failure, improves health outcomes, and enhances the quality of life for those with end-stage kidney disease.

Dialysis Program Protocol

The caregivers at every Ciena Healthcare community are committed to ensuring residents who require dialysis receive treatments at the frequency prescribed by their doctors. We also provide the supportive care they need to cope with the discomfort and side effects of dialysis.

Some of our communities feature on-site dialysis, allowing us to minimize disruptions to residents' routines and maximize their comfort during, after, and between sessions.

This program may be ideal for individuals who require short-term skilled nursing, rehabilitation, or long-term care customized for end-stage renal disease.

The Dialysis Support Program is designed for individuals who are medically stable (e.g., stable cardiac status) and require short-term skilled nursing, rehabilitation, or long-term care. Attending physicians are welcome to follow their patient's participation. If that is not feasible, a member of the medical staff will attend to the resident or guest in our community.

Quality of Life and Long-Term Care

At Ciena Healthcare, we understand that dialysis is not just about medical treatment—it’s about enhancing the resident’s overall quality of life. Our goal is to provide care that not only manages kidney disease but also helps residents stay active, engaged, and independent.

We encourage residents to participate in social and recreational activities that align with their energy levels and dialysis schedules. Our caregivers work to minimize the disruption that dialysis treatments may cause in daily life, making sure residents have the support they need to lead fulfilling lives despite their condition.
